In a previous post, Biblically Grounded, I mentioned that RCC will strive to keep to the Biblical structure of church, while understanding that everything else will be held loosely; changable as the culture around us changes, in order to reach it.
When you study the history and culture of Jesus time and place, you quickly realize that Jesus communicated huge, eternal spiritual truths in a way that made sense to those with whom He was speaking. Although the word "relevant" is greatly overused, Jesus was that and more. Paul was also one who took in the culture around him first and then attempted to frame the Gospel in way that clicked with his audience, even if it meant using no direct quotes of scripture (Acts 17:15-34).
Jesus and Paul modeled what it meant to be missional. "Missional," according to Ed Stezer in his book Planting Missional Churches, "implies the approach of a missionary - being indigenous to the culture, seeking to understand and learn, adapting methods to the mission field - but winding up in a biblical form of a church."
Let me be clear: The good news of Jesus Christ is always relevant. It is how we express that relevancy that must be continuously examined based on the community we exist in.
